Why else do we write or read but to invoke a loving voice in the dark, to alleviate our loneliness, to forge solidarity, to make sense of our inherent, stunning madness?
I am from Bangladesh and was raised in Hawaii and Thailand. I hold a BA in Women's Studies, a BS in Theater, and a minor in Religion from Skidmore College. I worked as an actress and model in New York for 8 years. Now, I write and perform my own work. I'm a life-coach as well. My memoir, I Am Yours, is presently circulating publishers. I also write for Dear Reema, where I respond to letters sent in by readers. Additionally, I am the creator of You Are the Voice, a talk on resilience and empowerment in the face of adversity. I perform You Are the Voice at various colleges and other venues nationwide.
My first memoir, I Am Yours, is written as though I am speaking to my imaginary best friend from childhood whom I never released. Some know their inner voice as God, a guardian angel, or a long deceased ancestor. Mine I know as a presence I met when I was 3, a friend I named "Love" - Love is my voice in the dark. I Am Yours is my story of stubborn resilience through an unstable childhood, anorexia, disownment, rape, marriage, betrayal, divorce, the acting and modeling industry, racism, sexism, classism and more, with the help of ever loyal Love. And, we grow up together. My writing voice ages with each section of I Am Yours - at age 3, 4, 7, 13, 31, I speak as that age.
Life has not been simple; it has been full. I Am Yours is an intimate, comprehensive study in identity, loyalty, integrity, and authenticity. I explore my past and present refracting selves: child, daughter, sister, wife, actress, Bangladeshi, immigrant, commodity, artist, woman.
On Dear Reema and You Are the Voice, the main intention is to serve others. I cease being the main character and focus on the reader's and listener's journey. I source from my own life to explore similar topics as those found in I Am Yours: our connective, collective trials, childhood wounds, addiction, ambition, body image, sex, dating, love, relationships, self-empowerment, ownership, spirituality, recovery, healing, humility, purpose. For me, art is service. Art alchemizes our pain into poetry. In every form of my work, I aim to inspire and empower others to rise to their bravest self.
"Pain, insecurity, trials, anger, confusion, the near-reckless desire to love and be loved deeply, these are our common specialties. Our fault-lines are where our paths intersect, where your shards align with mine. Reasons to never feel less or better than anyone. Reasons to never feel alone.
How lovely that being human soothes the ache of being human.”
I believe only we author our lives. I believe we are one story. I believe all we truly need, we hold within.
